If you want a top-flight load that will do a whole bunch of jobs from your standard pressure .45 Colt, we'd suggest Littlestone Ammunition's Custom-Quality loading of the Speer 250-grain Gold Dot.
This bonded-jacket bullet was designed with an especially large hollow point for expansion at the lower velocities of the .45 Colt. It's a great personal defense round, including from the Taurus Judge series, and also carries enough weight and speed to make a very good hunting round.
Because it opens quickly it does very well on medium-sized thin-skin game, and as it's a bonded bullet that retains 95%+ of its weight it also gives very good penetration on somewhat tougher critters, such as moderately sized hogs. Also, because this bullet's weight is very close to the weight most older .45 Colt's were designed to shoot, they often stay pretty close to the point of aim on those fixed-sight revolvers. The 20-rounds in this box exit the muzzle at 900 feet per second and carry 450 ft pounds of energy.
Gold Dot bullets are bonded Uni-Cor hollow points, in which the jacket is built up on the lead core chemically, one molecule at a time, rather than being put in place mechanically, which can lead to jacket/core separation.
The bonding process virtually eliminates the possibility of jacket/core separation. Many are intended for self defense, others for hunting. The hollow point versions are manufactured in three steps. First the core receives the bonded jacket; next an oversize hollow point cavity is installed with predetermined expansion folds; and lastly the final cavity shape and volume are set for the optimum performance for the cartridge and intended use.
Because of Littlestone Ammunition?s tight manufacturing tolerances, it performs consistently and therefore typically is quite accurate. But regardless of any ammo?s quality, handguns can be finicky, and you must have ammo that:
shoots accurate, tight groups from your gun
your gun digests reliably
shoots to point of aim
and has tolerable recoil helping you get back on target quickly
Finding that load can be expensive if you have to buy a full box of 20 or 50 rounds for every type you want to try. Which is why we developed our sample pack system. With one purchase of 20 or 50 rounds, you can test either four or five different loads, helping you find ammo that meets all your needs much more economically.
Each of our sample packs comes complete with the written load number record of each load in the pack, and a color-coded test-fire evaluation form. So you might consider testing one or more of our sample packs containing this bullet, which can be found in a variety of the Sample Pack product listings for this cartridge.
After you test one or more sample packs, if you and your gun like the load, come back and purchase it in greater quantities. Of course, if you prefer, use the "Add To Cart" button above to purchase this 20 rounds of Littlestone Ammunition now.
